I was there the whole time. They were there the whole time. I was drenched in heavy metal. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Tears for Fears came in at about 1982 which puts me at 22 yrs old. I confess to caving in to the less than heavy Ramones in 1978, but after the disco scare I was defensive. I was closed minded. If I were to meet a band on the street – I had to be afraid of them to like them. If they didn’t dress in leather or denim – I woudn’t like them. It’s funny how you can tell by the music if you can beat ’em up or not. I could probably take out two of the B-52s with one punch but that was a special exception for a special band. Tears for Fears wasn’t dangerous or even edgy. While they were on my radar (How could thay not be with the airplay) I just didn’t attatch to them.
I have good news and bad news for myself. The bad news is that I missed out on the Tears for Fears experience in the eighties and nineties when it was happening and real. The good news is that there is a lot I have yet to hear.
On one hand, I am sorry Tears for Fears for not trusting you in the eighties and nineties / On the other hand it’s probably new fans like me that are discovering and purchasing your back catalogue and keeping you in your nice digs.
Love,
Robert
